About SKMCH
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital is the brainchild of Mr. Imran Khan, Pakistan’s 22nd State leader and chief who won the Cricket World Cup. He had the idea to build the Hospital after his mother, Mrs. Shaukat Khanum, died of cancer in 1985. After witnessing firsthand the plight of poor cancer patients in Pakistani hospitals during his mother’s illness, he realized the need for a specialized cancer center in Pakistan.
In a developing nation where many people do not have access to even the most basic health care facilities, cancer was viewed as the ultimate symbol of hopelessness and near-certain death. Pakistan lacked a specialized cancer treatment center before the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre opened its doors in Lahore. So, Imran Khan decided to go after his dream of making cancer treatment affordable for everyone in his country. Thus, the tale of a child’s persevering through adoration for his mom and a country’s energy started.
